Habitat:
Young woods ca. 50 years old, grown up in corner of former field, gentle E-facing slope in small valley, surrounded by cultivated fields. With Prunus serotina, Celtis occidentalis, Ulmus americana.
Occurrence Remarks:
Voucher for wood specimen, MADw. Same individual collected with flowers on 5 April 2015 under no. Nee 62078.; Tree 21 m tall, 55 cm in diameter (measured), with two equal main trunks. Bark finely and tightly flaky, light gray-brown. Shade leaves; note branching of some lateral veins, characteristic of U. rubra, but not found in either U. pumila or U. americana; leaves larger than in U. pumila but smaller than in U. rubra, even shade leaves. Fruit easily falling.
