Habitat: In logged-over woods, replanted with Pinus resinosa. Ground was plowed long ago. Sandy, well-drained soil, in light shade to full sun. Associates include scattered, resprouting and remnant Quercus macrocarpa, Quercus ellipsoidalis, and Quercus rubra. Planted, 1 to 1.5 m tall P. resinosa and resprouting Corylus americana common. Rather sparse herbaceous layer includes Pteridium aquilinum, Danthonia spicata, Poa pratensis, Andropogon gerardii, Bromus kalmii, Galium boreale, Conyza canadensis, Calystegia sepi
