In 1.0--1.5 meters of water on a sand bottom covered with a few inches of muck, among sparse vegetation consisting of Nymphaea odorata, Sparganium eurycarpum, "wild rice" (Zizania, probably Z. palustris), Ceratophyllum demersum, Megalodonta beckii, Myriophyllum spicatum, and "clasping leaf pondweed" (Potamogeton sp.).
More than 50 plants. Roots dense, fibrous; stems thick, fleshy, often with a few submersed lvs (most shed when removed from water); lvs extremely variable in shape, from finely divided and much branched to fleshy and variably toothed near surface.
