Habitat: Undisturbed northern mesic forest, dominated by Acer saccharum, with Tilia americana, Tsuga canadensis, Betula allegheniensis, and scattered Pinus strobus and Thuja occidentalis; shrub layer minimally developed (Taxus canadensis, Ribes sp.) but herbaceous flora rich. Assoc.: Acer saccharum seedlings, Allium tricoccum, Aralia nudicaulis, Arisaema triphyllum, Athyrium filix-femina var. angustum, Carex leptonervia, Dicentra cucullaria, Erythronium sp., and Trillium grandiflorum.
