Habitat: Mesic forest on level to gently sloping topography, managed for timber harvest. Poorly drained spots such as wet skid tracks or ephemeral ponds. Canopy trees: Acer saccharum, A. rubrum, Ostrya virginiana, Tilia americana asssociates: Rubus idaeus, Lobelia inflata, Poa palustris, Carex arctata, Solidago gigantea, Erigeron annuus, Gymnocarpium dryopteris, Cinna latifolia, Elymus hystrix, Cirsium vulgare.
Notes: Spikelets around 5 mm in length and the panicle is is erect and spreading, seeds maturing later than in nearby C. latifolia.
