Habitat: Extensive northern mesic forest atop a central ridge of a long narrow monadnock of metamorphic sedimentary rocks. Upland 2nd-growth sugar mpale forest with yellow birch and red oak. Additional associates: Adiantum pedatum, Athyrium filix-femina michauxii, Dryopteris spinulosa, Osmunda claytoniana, Gymnocarpium dryopteris, Thelypteris phegopteris, Botrychium matricariaefolium, B. multifidum, B. virginianum, Lycopodium flabelliforme, L. lucidulum, L. obscurum dendroideum, Schizachne purpurascens, Brachyeletrum erectum septentrionale, Cinna latifolia, Poa saltuensis, Oryzopsis asperifolia, Clintonia borealis, Maianthemum canadense canadense, Uvularia sessilifolia, Smilacina racemosa, Caulophyllum thalictroides, Actaea pachypoda, Osmorhiza claytonii, Dirca palustris, Carex convoluta, C. gracillima, and C. intumescens.
