Habitat: Steep, gravelly, dry slope with many prairie species. Growing in an opening in an oak forest (southern dry-mesic forest). Associates include: Andropogon gerardi, A. scoparius, Solidago nemoralis, S. speciosa, Aster sericeus, A. sagittifolius, Rhus glabra, Petalostemum purpureum, Asclepias tuberosa, A. verticillata, Liatris aspera, Desmodium canadense.
