On W-facing slope near top ridge, formerly oak savanna, now heavily pastured for many decades. This species common, with Carya ovata, Ostrya virginiana, Acer rubrum, Ulmus americana (the last ones are dying from Dutch Elm Disease). Small tree 10 m tall, 30 cm in diameter. Bark dark, deeply furrowed. Leaves dark green above, whitened below.
