Habitat: Small shallow seepage lake with very soft alkaline water. Seasonal and yearly fluctuations in water level maintain sandy and mucky shoreline in open condition. Along edge of little-used vehicle track through and in openings in surrounding. Quercus velutina-Pinus banksiana woodland on low sand ridge. Assoc.: Carex pensylvanica (dominant), Arabis lyrata, Rubus idaeus var. strigosus, Rubus 13720, Tephrosia virginiana, Rhus glabra, and Lithospermum canescens. Correct name: Carex aenea; syn.: C. siccata, C. foenea. Culms solitary from deep-seated branching rhizomes. Common.
