Habitat: Southern mesic forest (Acer saccharum-1 dom. in terms of freq., w/ Fraxinus, Celtis, and Ostrya) on low flat middle-level river terrace; soil a dark brown, presumably circumneutral silt loam; habitat moister than adjoining forest on upper terrace. Assoc.: Carex radiata, C. gracillima, C. tenera, Brachyeletrum erectum, Smilacina racemosa, Geranium maculatum, Viburnum lentago, (in moist spots) Ranunculus hispidus var. nitidus, and Staphylea trifolia.
